New on A is for Architecture
An Interview with Tim Altenhof

For a recent episode of the podcast A is for Architecture, Tim Altenhof speaks with host Ambrose Gillick about his new book, Breathing Space: The Architecture of Pneumatic Beings. “I think the one seminal thing that tries to overcome our division as human beings with, say, the natural world is really by dint of breathing. And the lung is exactly what facilitates this very idea of breaking down boundaries between interior and exterior. There is no doubt that it’s buried deep inside our thoracic cage. But at the same time, the minute we are born, we plug ourselves into the atmosphere and maintain this connection for as long as we live. So there is a certain ambiguity, a topological problem, if you will. Is the lung an internal organ or is it external? It’s both at the same time.”
